  1. A friend and I had a chat about this game yesterday. It got savaged in reviews. I argued that the game was relying too much on “Easter eggs” from the movies. A game is doomed to fail if it goes down this route without good content and gameplay. On a side note, why haven’t you included a thumbnail of prometheus above ;)

    • Poor Colonial Marines…. I wanted so badly for the game to be good.

We didn’t include Prometheus because it isn’t technically considered to be part of the Alien franchise. It’s in the same “universe,” but it explores it’s own separate ideas.

      • That’s B.S….for all intents and purposes it’s a precursor to the Alien franchise they just don’t want to admit it. It was pretty much marketed as a prequel, the only thing is that Ridley Scott didn’t want to have to deal with the fans if he screwed up along the way. Let’s just hope he doesn’t do the same thing with Blade Runner 2.

  2. It really came down between Alien and Aliens and then it became a question of which director did it better Ridley Scott or James Cameron and I had to go with Cameron’s film Aliens. Alien focused much more on atmosphere and visuals because Scott is a much more setting driven director. Where as Cameron seems to have a better grasp of an all around experience. Plus Alien seemed HEAVILY influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey, ALMOST to the point that you could call fowl. Aliens just has the better all around mix of atmosphere, visuals, action and storytelling. Cameron’s Ripley seems much more involving and has much more depth as a character, the main plot for Aliens just seems much more interesting. Weyland Yutani goes from greedy salvage corporation willing to kill off its crew to make money to greedy space settlement corporation that doesn’t mind putting the lives of countless civilians in danger.
In short, it really just depends on what you are looking for in a movie. If you don’t mind a slow building suspense that kind of lacks any real character development then Alien isn’t all that bad but if you are looking for interesting characters, depth, engaging action with a hint of suspense then Aliens is probably more your style.

    • Aliens had a bit action and more direction than the original. I feel like the production team had a much better idea of what they wanted to do with the sequel. The suspense was still there, but amplified and supplemented by slight better writing.

  3. That is such a tough choice since Alien and Aliens are my 2 favourite movies of all time but I give the edge to Aliens since I get wayyyy more Xenomorph action in that one. I just wish I could vote for both lol.

  4. Aliens isn’t just my favorite of the franchise. It’s one of my all time favorites period. I love Sci-Fi, and while I’m not much of a fan of horror movies, I do like the ones where it isn’t just some evil creature vs. helpless victims wanting to be butchered. Aliens takes a well geared, well funded, well organized team of marines and puts them against something so primal and horrendous that you still feel the suspense and terror all the way through. That feeling of having lots of bullets but nowhere near enough is awesome. That’s what a horror movie should be like in my opinion, and it sucks that there are so very very few of them (at least very few that are even worth remembering.

The only three things I can think of that even come close to the feeling of those first two movies: 1. Pandorum (while not nearly as good, it at least captures that same vibe as Alien for most of the movie in my opinion.) 2. Pitch Black 3. Dead Space 1 (as I mentioned on the Dead Space 3 thread here yesterday.)

    • I’m a horror movie fiend. I will watch pretty much anything horror themed, knowing full-well that about 80% of them are absolutely dreadful. The fusion between sci-fi and horror can be a beautiful thing if well-executed and Aliens is a prime example. One of my all-time favorites has always been “The Thing.” Nothing since has truly captured the horror of foreign body invasion and cellular manipulation. It was essentially the inspiration for Dead Space, whether they acknowledge it or not.

  5. My absolute favorite is Aliens. Alien comes a good second. But Aliens is the top pick for me. I think it has a good balance of story, action and suspense to always keep me on the edge of my seat.

    • I totally agree. Aliens is also my favorite. It took the classic element of suspense from.the first movie and incorporated some very well-crafted bits of action. Amazing film.

  6. I love that all four films fall into different genres. Alien is an amazing thriller, sci-fi horror, with suspense and surprisingly little action when you go back and revisit it because of low budget and Alien SFX – but this made it much more of a suspenseful thriller if you ask me. Aliens, due to the higher budget and all round more aliens, is an excellent action film, while Alien 3 (again reducing the number of aliens again) becomes far more dramatic due to its prison setting. Alien Resurrection, though it receives a lot of flack from fans of the franchise, is excellently written as a homage to the franchise and may even be taken satirically when you consider the amount of comedy in comparison to the other films. Personally I think Alien is definitely one of the strongest sci-fi franchises out there :)

    • Very well put. Each film has it’s own special role in the series. The first one is classic and it’s kind of like the ‘chicken and the egg’ scenario, you can’t have an awesome sequel without the original.

My favorite will always be the first two. They did the best job of capturing the fear of the unknown. The heroes didn’t know what they were up against and that made the moments of tension intensely satisfying.
